While installation requirements may vary depending which type and style of cat wall furniture you purchase, these basic factors will apply.

Installing your cat wall shelf system does require some basic DIY skills. Here are some tools that you will likely need:

  • Stud finder
  • Pencil
  • Level
  • Drill
  • 7/64″ drill bit
  • 3/16″ drill bit (for drywall anchors)
  • Phillips-head screwdriver and/or bit
  • Hammer (for drywall anchors)

Instructions and Mounting Hardware

All pieces come with detailed instructions and the necessary mounting hardware needed – which may include special drill bits, screws, brackets, washers, and/or drywall anchors.

Mounting Recommendations

Studs are the wood 2×4’s behind drywall in most modern homes. Every wall-mounted piece we sell is built to be installed into at least one wall stud. Most homes have 16″ studs, so that’s what we build our designs for. If you have other spacing, like 24″ studs, the Cat Mod collection would still work for those.

When some of our shelves or beds have multiple brackets, they are designed to have one bracket mounted into a stud and the other into drywall using included drywall anchors. When mounted properly, everything we sell is incredibly sturdy. Each wood platform holds a minimum of 85 lbs and each fabric section hold 65 lbs.

If you are having trouble locating studs, there are other options. One of those is using backer boards. We suggest using 3/4″ plywood and screwing either one panel or multiple panels to the wall, then filling in the cracks with spackle and painting the color of the wall. This does minimum damage when removed and creates an incredibly sturdy surface to mount on. When using backer boards, take care not to bury the screws into the plywood when mounting, or spackling over the screws. We did this and we still do not know how we’re going to remove the backer boards when we move.
